McDonald’s has been featuring their new Jalapeño Double Burger for a few weeks now (along with the Jalapeño chicken burger) so I stopped in and tried one.
First off, the Jalapeño Double is two all beef patties, with a slice of white cheddar cheese in between. On top of that you’ll find not only sliced jalapeños, but also deep fried crispy jalapeno pieces. Between the toasted buns, there is a spicy, creamy ranch sauce.
I paid $2.
At first glance, it looks like they gave me two bottom buns. The buns weren’t that great anyway, so that might not have been a mistake.
The crispy jalapenos were a nice texture and crunch that didn’t have a powerful flavor. They were just at around a medium heat. The sliced jalapeños really brought the heat that I expected. I would prefer a little bit more heat, but for the average spicy sandwich lover, this is probably perfect. The two different heat styles from the jalapeños really bring a depth to the flavor.
The ranch sauce does a nice job complementing the entire package. The main job of the ranch sauce seems to be for keeping the entire sandwich from getting too dry. It does have a great flavor contrasting the heat from the jalapeños.
The beef itself doesn’t do a whole lot, but does add volume to the burger. I couldn’t really taste it over the powerful flavors of the other ingredients. The cheese is soft, and gooey between the patties, but the actual cheddar flavor is sort of left out with so many other things going on.
The real hero is the jalapeño/ranch sauce combo (as it should be) with the most flavor which is really delicious.
Grade: 4 out of 5
Overall, I felt it was a great offering for those who like a spicy sandwich. The price was good too, although a bit higher than I’d expect, I felt it was well within reason for just $2.
