I’ve always been a huge fan of the regular Taco Bell Cheesy Gordita Crunch. It was the crunchiness of a regular hard shell taco and is really filling like a soft taco. I’ve also loved the Doritos Locos Taco nacho cheese flavor. Combining the two items has been a favorite of “menu hackers” every since the DLT came out, where you’d order a Cheesy Gordita Crunch with the shell of a DLT. Taco Bell Headquarters must have taken notice, because this week they decided to just release the product that many have been special ordering.
The Doritos Cheesy Gordita Crunch is absolutely amazing. When you bite into it, you taste the cheese, beef, and sauce and veggies, and then the cheesy Doritos shell feels like a special spicy “kick” at the back of the bite. The beef/Doritos flavor combo that I’ve loved ever since I made nachos at home is there, but it seems to be enhanced and “bulked up” by the thick gordita tortilla shell.
I love the spicy Pepper Jack sauce that fits comfortably in the main “pocket of the shell. Most of the time when I would eat a Doritos Locos Taco, the shell would break and I would have to quickly adjust my eating style in order to make sure nothing falls out. Here that isn’t an issue. The gordita shell with its delicious cheese layer between hard and soft shell holds everything in.
It has 3 cheeses total, and everything tastes so harmonious with the other ingredients. It isn’t too spicy, but not bland at all. The cheese is the perfect consistency of melty, but not drippy. The sauce doesn’t overpower, but perfectly compliments everything else. With each and every bite, you could close your eyes and focus one element, or relax and enjoy the harmony. Each bite is like a symphony of flavors playing together as a single unit in a continuous crescendo for my delicious enjoyment.
Hunger Filling Grade: A – Not only is it delicious, but also very filling. Depending on how hungry you are, this could be your entire meal, or at least the main entree.
Value Grade: B+ – You will pay a premium (usually about 30 cents) for the Doritos shell over a regular Cheesy Gordita Crunch. I paid $2.69. Is it worth it? Yes, yes it is.
Bottomline – This isn’t as much a review as it is a celebration. Don’t overanalyize it, just enjoy the ride. Bravo Taco Bell.
