Fresh off of his near decade long career on the famous “build-team” on Discovery Channel’s Mythbusters, Grand Imahara has been picked up by McDonald’s to answer the question: “What goes into McDonald’s hamburger patties.”
Now, this entire arraingment seems rank with a “conflict of interest” but Grant is a big name and McDonald’s wants to capitalize on his fame of “telling it how it is” and boost slumping sales.
The promotional campaign will “uncover the truth” about McDonald’s burgers, McRib sandwiches, and Chicken McNuggets. Grant is answering questions about where the beef comes from, and why the meat is frozen. He also talks with different players in the McDonalds supply chain process and gets his own hands dirty on the meat sorting floor at Cargill (supplier of much of the McDonald’s beef). As well as jumping in a freezer.
Finally, Imahara tries a Big Mac of his own (which he admits he hasn’t eaten in 15 years). Spoiler Alert: He loves it.
McDonald’s resturants have been underperforming, and their burgers constantly appear at the bottom in taste tests while losing out to other fast food chains as well as higher quality chains like Chipotle and Five Guys.
While addressing concerns about McDonald’s quality is important, this marketing campaign seems too contrived, and lowers the credibility of both McDonald’s and Imahara. One great thing to come of this is McDonalds will be fielding questions via Facebook and Twitter. They will also be creating videos to answer some of those questions. Now if only we could get them to answer questions on the poor odds of their Monopoly campaign.
